Banif Bank sponsors art exhibition in aid of Din l-Art Ħelwa

Inspired by the coastal towers, artist Janet Grech’s collection ‘Bulwarks of Fortitude’ offered viewers a set of paintings which captured the towers from various perspectives. The exhibition was held at the 17th Century Wignacourt Tower in St Paul’s Bay in collaboration with Din l-Art Helwa and Banif Bank (Malta) plc.

Built by the knights, the coastal towers were strategically constructed as a defence for our islands. Although some are quite small in size, the towers served to guard the coast and raise the alarm in the event of imminent threat. The positioning of these towers was planned as such so that one could see both neighbouring towers, which acted as an early warning system against invaders. As soon as one tower spotted a suspicious event, a fire signal was started which was picked up by the neighbouring towers, in so doing carrying on the message.

“Through her art, Janet manages to give life to the towers using different colours to enhance the natural elements of the surrounding areas,” said Simon Grech, Head of Corporate Services at Banif when visiting the exhibition. “Her work serves to commemorate Malta’s fortresses! In addition, a percentage of the artist’s earnings will be passed on to Din l-Art Ħelwa – all these factors put together made it easy for us at Banif to support the initiative,” concluded Simon Grech.

“I am grateful to all those who visited the exhibition and to Banif who has accepted to sponsor my initiative,” said Janet Grech. “I hope that the message oozes out from each and every stroke on my canvas: Do not let us be neglected, we were and still are very powerful symbols to this Island.”
